The setting
Crystal Beach. The easy side of the Texas coast.
A short walk to the Gulf, a free ferry from Galveston, and the kind of pace where the car barely moves all week.
Why here
A long thin sandbar with the volume turned down.
Crystal Beach sits on the Bolivar Peninsula, a long thin strip of sand between Galveston Bay and the Gulf. It is quieter than Galveston, less developed than the big Texas resort beaches, and a free 18-minute ferry ride from the Galveston seawall. Houston is about ninety minutes north, give or take the ferry line.
The beaches here are drive-on, so families set up their day-camp at the waterline. The pace is slow. The sunsets are loud. Most weeks here, the biggest decision is what to grill for dinner.

The actual secret. Weather better than summer. Crowds gone.
December – February
Quiet. The house stays warm. Beach walks are excellent. Bring a jacket.
Getting here
The ferry, the highway, and a small trick.
From Houston, the standard route is I-45 south to Galveston, then the free Galveston-Bolivar ferry. The crossing itself is about 18 minutes. The line on summer weekends can be long. To beat it, arrive at the Galveston terminal before 9am or after 7pm. To avoid it entirely, drive in from the east via High Island (Hwy 124 to Hwy 87). It adds about forty-five minutes from Houston, but no ferry.
